NEW DELHI, March 29 (AFP) - Hundreds of rebellious inmates at an Indian prison have chased away their guards and taken control of the jail, a report said Friday.

Some 1,200 detainees drove out wardens Wednesday night at the prison in the Chapra district of the crime-ridden eastern state of Bihar, the Press Trust of India said.

Local police chief Kundan Krishna said the prisoners had locked themselves inside.

Additional security personnel have been deployed outside the state facility to prevent a large-scale jailbreak, Krishna said, but added that some prisoners could have already sneaked away.

"We are at this stage not in a position to speculate about the number of inmates who have escaped. That will be possible only after a head count of prisoners in the jail," he said.

He said the stand-off was likely to end soon once troops manage to force their way inside the prison and overpower the inmates.

Earlier this month, 11 convicts escaped from Bihar's high-security Jamui jail after hurling home-made bombs at their guards.
